Hypochlorous acid

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is produced by white blood cells as a part of our bodies’ natural defence system.

HYPO-LYTE is electrolytically generated HOCl.

It’s a natural anti-microbial and anti-viral agent and the molecule that the human immune system produces to fight invasive organisms and infections. When produced outside the body it kills pathogens immediately upon contact by damaging cell walls and disrupting proteins, lipids, and DNA. HOCl Solutions uses the latest electrochemical technology and the purest raw materials to mimic the natural process of HOCl production.  The result is a stabilised, pH neutral HOCl with a shelf life of up to 12 months.

HYPO-LYTE used for surface and machine disinfecting in industry, healthcare and hospitality. It also used in wound and personal care, as well as for water processing and farming as a safe alternative to harmful chemicals.  HOCl is further used eradicate airborne pathogens and to sanitise large areas fast,  by fogging.

Why it’s ‘sudden’ popularity?

Recent technological advances make it possible to produce HOCl cost effectively, in quantity and with stability. It has proven anti-microbial and anti-viral effects without any of the long term issues for people and the planet associated with conventional, often toxic disinfectants.

I’d like to understand more of the science:

HYPO-LYTE is generated by electrolysing salt and water.  A direct electric current is applied across a pair of electrodes immersed in a solution of ions to drive an otherwise non-spontaneous chemical reaction. The key process is the removal or addition of electrons causing a change in the oxidation-reduction potential of the solution. HOCl has a low molecular weight and is neutrally charged. Unlike sodium hypochlorite (bleach) which is negatively charged. This is important as disinfectants and microbial pathogens interact with each other similarly to magnets. If you bring together two negatively charged magnets, they will repel each other. Bacteria and bleach are both negatively charged and thus repel each other whilst HOCl easily penetrates the walls of the pathogen and destroys it via oxidation.

Is HOCl accredited by any governing bodies?

In South Africa HOCl Solutions has NRCS and SABS 1853:2020 approval to produce HYPO-LYTE for use as a skin, food and environmentally safe anti-bacterial and anti-viral solution surface disinfectant. HOCl Solutions is also accredited by the South African Health Professions Council (SAHPRA), and the South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA) and also holds an ISO 9000 accreditation certifying that manufacturing processes meet international standards.

Internationally, in the USA, HOCl is accredited by the EPA for surface disinfecting and the FDS for use as a hand sanitiser and wound healer. In Europe it is approved through the EU BIOCIDE and the CE MARK.

HOCl is non-corrosive, and can be advantageously used for environmentally friendly cleaning and disinfection processes.
