THE SCIENCE
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is produced by white blood cells as a part of our bodies’ natural defence system.
HYPO-LYTE is a neutral-to-acidic solution of HOCl – a natural antimicrobial and antiviral agent. The human immune system produces HOCl to fight invasive organisms and infections. HOCl Solutions uses the latest electrochemical technology and the purest raw materials to synthetically produce HOCl. The result is a stabilised, pH-neutral HOCl with a shelf life of up to 12 months. HYPO-LYTE kills pathogens on contact by damaging their cell walls and disrupting proteins, lipids and DNA.
HYPO-LYTE provides a safe alternative to harmful cleaning chemicals for businesses. It is suitable for use in a large number of economic sectors. The solution is used to disinfect surfaces and machinery in the manufacturing, healthcare and hospitality industries. It is also used for water processing and as part of hygiene protocols in animal husbandry and agriculture.
GOOD is a range of HOCl products for personal care and use in the home. GOOD by HOCl Solutions offers natural sanitizer sprays for hands, masks, baby bottles, dummies, toys, fresh produce, and wound care.
The COVID-19 pandemic has left us disinfecting and sanitizing workplaces and homes more than ever before. Many of the cleaning products we typically reach for contain harmful chemicals, and people are starting to experience negative health effects from prolonged use. They are looking for something better – for themselves, their families and the planet.
HOCl is an excellent alternative to harsh disinfectants. It is a more powerful oxidant than bleach and QACs but without any of their negative side effects. Recent technological advances make it possible for large quantities of stable HOCl to be produced in a cost-effective way.
HOCl Solutions produces HOCl and markets it under the brand names: Hypo-Lyte and GOOD.
What’s the science behind HOCl?
HOCl, the active ingredient in HYPO-LYTE, is generated by electrolysing salt and water. We apply a direct electric current across a pair of electrodes immersed in an ionic solution. This current drives an otherwise non-spontaneous chemical reaction that then changes the solution’s oxidation-reduction potential.
USEFUL TO KNOW: HOCl has a low molecular weight and is neutrally charged, unlike sodium hypochlorite (bleach) which is negatively charged. Disinfectants and microbial pathogens interact with each other similarly to magnets. If you bring two negatively charged magnets together, they will repel each other. Bacteria and bleach are both negatively charged and thus repel each other. This means that bleach actually takes longer to nullify the pathogen. Since HOCl is neutrally charged, HYPO-LYTE can easily penetrate the walls of the negatively charged pathogen and destroy it via oxidation.
Sounds too good to be true. Are Hypo-Lyte and GOOD accredited by any regulatory bodies?
HOCl Solutions has NRCS and SABS 1853/SANS approval in South Africa to produce HYPO-LYTE/GOOD for use as a safe, environmentally friendly, antibacterial and antiviral solution.
We also hold accreditation from SAHPRA.
Our manufacturing plant has ISO 9001 accreditation. And our products are certified as Halaal.

Internationally, HOCl is approved by the biggest regulatory bodies in the USA. The EPA approves HOCl for surface disinfecting. The FDA approves HOCl for use as a hand sanitizer and wound cleanser. HOCl is an approved biocide in Europe and holds a CE marking.
HOCl Solutions also produces ALKA-LYTE, a high-pH (11-13) alkaline degreaser product containing liquid ionised sodium hydroxide.
